Research methods in Music Therapy - Profª. Barbara Wheeler
This workshop will provide an overview of quantitative and qualitative music therapy research and mixed methods research, as well as information on other types of research. Participants will learn about the philosophical underpinnings of quantitative and qualitative research and basic principles and procedures used in both. Quantitative research methods will include experimental (randomized controlled trials and other adaptations of experimental research), surveys, single-case designs, longitudinal studies, and meta-analyses. Qualitative research methods will include phenomenological inquiry, grounded theory, first-person research, arts-based research, action research, ethnographic research, and critical inquiry. Musical, historical, and philosophical research will also be discussed.
The presenter will share examples of actual music therapy research studies, including practical aspects of conducting research as well as the findings and implications. Participants will have an opportunity to apply some of the research methods to their clinical questions and formulate basic designs for research studies.
