Session 1: Rhythmic Freedom: De-mystifying Complex Rhythms Through the Voice and the Body. Dia 28/09
This workshop will explore various techniques for understanding and conceptualizing complex rhythms found in todays’ music. Participants will learn to create a framework to learn challenging rhythms and expand their abilities over time. Topics will include specific strategies for learning complex rhythms, working effectively with a metronome, building fluidity with polyrhythms, and using the body as a memory tool. The presenter will also explain Indian vocal techniques that can be used to enhance your understanding of rhythm.
Participants will be encouraged to participate through clapping, drumming, and speaking. The presenter will share and discuss specific examples of percussion music, but encourages participants to bring in any examples of music that they are learning that they would like to clarify.
Session 2: Exercising Creativity with Graphic Scores Dia 29/09
This workshop will address the issues surrounding the creation and execution of graphic scores. The participants will examine the tension between composition and improvisation found in graphic scores while discussing various approaches to a successful realization of a work. The presenter will share multiple examples of scores that utilize graphic notation and investigate the implications for the performers and composers. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments to explore strategies of interpretation and experiment with short performances.
