Jean-Cristophe Dobrzelewski
Classical trumpeter Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski holds the position of Associate Professor of Trumpet at West Chester University of Pennsylvania School of Music, and is an active freelancer in the Philadelphia area. Having been raised in both Costa Rica and Switzerland, he regularly appears as recitalist, chamber musician, and clinician throughout Europe, Central America, and the United States. He is former co-principal trumpet of the Midland-Odessa Symphony and the Lone Star Brass in Texas.
Founder of the West Chester University Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild, Dobrzelewski is founder and host of WCU’s Annual International Trumpet Festival, which features performers and pedagogues from around the world in a weekend of concerts, clinics, and master-classes. He hosted the 2014 International Trumpet Guild Conference, and the 2012 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition, as well as been awarded several local, state, and nationwide grants, including the National Endowment for the Arts “Access to Artistic Excellence” Grant, to pursue various musical projects.
A founding member of the Tromba Mundi trumpet ensemble, The Tryptique Ensemble, and the West Texas Brass Project, Dobrzelewski performs extensively as a chamber musician. He also enjoys planning performance tours and educational opportunities for his WCU students, and travels with them both locally and abroad. A believer that music is for everyone, he has spent the last 25 years bringing music to the masses, performing in schools, churches, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, and retirement communities.
Dobrzelewski has two recordings for trumpets and organ under the Swiss AMIE label, Tryptique (2004) and Renewal (2005). Tromba Mundi released two albums: Tromba Mundi under the MSR Classics label (2008), and Sinfonia Americana (2012). He can be heard on the MSR Classics recording of American music for brass and wind ensemble, Shadowcatcher (2011), a project for which he served as Executive Producer. A supporter and promoter of new music, Jean-Christophe has commissioned and performed or recorded more than twenty works for trumpet and various ensembles by North and Central American, as well as European, composers.
Dobrzelewski has participated as editor and typesetter in over 150 works on the Hickman Music Edition catalogue. He has also published several chamber music arrangements, as well as a sixteen-volume set of orchestral excerpts for trumpet, Essential Orchestral Excerpts, with HME. These excerpt books are widely used and have been recommended study material for New York Philharmonic trumpet auditions.
Dobrzelewski received a Prix de Trompette at the Conservatoire de Musique de Rueil-Malmaison in Paris, a Master of Music from the University of Maine, and a DMA from Arizona State University, all in the area of trumpet performance.
